Matthews Dollies are built for ease of use and accessibility for on location shooting. Removablewheels aid the dolly grip in preparing the dolly for any situation, centipedes may be placed directly on track for easy switch-over, and track wedges and basso blocks may be used to level the track.

Dolly track was created to allow directors and camera operators the smoothest moving shot possible. Prior to the existence of the track industry, grips would lay down wooden planks to create smooth surfaces.

Just imagine the splinters and subsequent angry grips with swollen fingers! Matthews was the first grip company in the United States to commercially manufacture dolly track.

Matthews recognized the need for an aid to the camera operator and dolly grip in their quest for the perfect shot. If you have to do a moving shot on sidewalk, without a level surface the shot will jump with each crack or bump. When setup correctly, track nullifies this problem.

Your director will pick the best shot possible for the movie regardless of the terrain. You, the dolly grip, will be required to lay track over rough terrain, and you should therefore be prepared for all manner of surfaces.

That preparation will include not only the various lengths and curves of track, but also track wedges or basso blocks to level the track, and a good-sized level to ensure the track is straight. With these tools, you can level any shot and support any dolly correctly.

Okay? the director of photography has chosen to use a stretch of ground that is uneven and likely to cause the camera to jump up and down.

First you begin by opening up the track and removing the orange caps on the ends. Matthews track folds and unfolds, making it easy to unpack and store. The orange caps on the ends of the track, called track end protectors, keep the ends of the track clean.

This will ensure that when two pieces of track are connected the joints will fit together smoothly and the seams between the two pieces of track are so negligible they will not affect the shot.

Lay the track across the area indicated. Don't worry about leveling the track just yet - first you need to position it according to instructions. Once in place, find the highest point in the track. The best way to accomplish this is to lie down on the ground and sight along the length of the track.

Yeah, you'll get your shirt dirty, but you didn't get into this business to wear a suit and tie to work! Once you've determined the highest point of the track you can begin to level the rest of the track up to that point.

The key to ensuring the life of your track is as long as it should be is to provide support at every cross member along the length of the track when you are leveling the track. You can not just level it up at the ends to the high point. Let me repeat: DO NOT level the track at the ends only.

This will cause the track to bend and become warped in those areas not supported by wedges or basso blocks. The correct way to level track is to insert wedges at every crossmember that is even the slightest bit uneven or removed from the ground.

As you are doing this, take your level and test the straightness of the track by laying the level both perpendicular across the two rails of the track and along the length of one of the track rails. Leaving nothing to chance is a good motto. When you are finished you may then roll the dolly onto the starter track and get that smooth shot.

For this type of track, Matthews manufactures the very highest quality product. All tubing is drawn over mandril to prevent seams from marring the surface of the tube and to give the track a very tight tolerance. Crossmembers connect the track rails at the industry standard of 24.5" center to center track width.

The over center latches clamping the track sections in place have a unique adjustable feature that allows you to get the tightest fit possible. The ends of the track are offset male and female to give extra support when joined together. All these features make for the safest, smoothest, most reliable track of this type in the industry.
