Overview

The Blackmagic Design SDI Expander 8x12G is a 1RU broadcast converter that provides simultaneous conversion in both directions between 12G-SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 IP. It converts eight independent 12G-SDI inputs to SMPTE 2110 while simultaneously converting eight separate SMPTE 2110 streams back to 12G-SDI, providing 16 channels of conversion in a single rack unit.

Two 100G QSFP28 connections provide the SMPTE 2110 network interfaces and support SMPTE ST 2022-7 redundant delivery across two independent IP networks. A separate 1G RJ45 connection is provided for NMOS control, configuration and firmware updates.

Performance

The SDI Expander provides eight 12G-SDI inputs and eight 12G-SDI outputs, supporting 1.5G, 3G, 6G and 12G-SDI. Each 100G network pair supports eight HD or Ultra HD senders and receivers. Supported Ultra HD standards extend through 2160p60.

Each SDI input and output supports 16 channels of embedded audio, while each SMPTE 2110 IP video stream also carries 16 channels of embedded audio. Blackmagic IP10 can optionally be used for 2160p59.94 and 2160p60 IP video.

Applications

The SDI Expander 8x12G is designed for broadcast studios, production facilities, OB systems and other installations that need to connect multiple conventional 12G-SDI devices to high-capacity SMPTE 2110 infrastructure.

Its dual 100G architecture provides ST 2022-7 network redundancy for resilient broadcast operation. The front panel incorporates a 2.2-inch color LCD, three control buttons, a spin knob, built-in audio monitoring speaker and 6.35 mm headphone connection.
