Overview

The Blackmagic Design UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is an ultra-compact professional capture device for bringing SDI or HDMI video into a Mac, Windows or Linux computer. It connects through a high-speed 40Gbps USB-C interface compatible with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 computers, making it suitable for portable production, editing and streaming systems.

Performance

UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G provides one 10-bit SD/HD 3G-SDI input and one HDMI 2.0 input. It supports SD and HD video standards up to 1080p60, with SDI data rates of 270Mb, 1.5G and 3G.

The HDMI connection supports 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 sampling, with RGB and YUV processing. Hardware-based real-time color-space conversion is provided, and the device supports Rec. 601, Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 color spaces.

Applications

Its compact form factor makes the UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G suitable for live streaming, broadcast ingest, video editing, AI image-processing workflows and portable production. Blackmagic specifically lists compatibility with popular video applications such as DaVinci Resolve, while its standard capture architecture makes it useful for connecting professional cameras, switchers and other SDI or HDMI sources to a computer.
