Fast Ethernet On One Strand

Spare fiber is often the real constraint rather than distance. The F-FE-TRS-A is the A-side unit of a single-fiber Fast Ethernet converter pair that sends and receives 10/100 Mbps over one strand using wavelength division multiplexing. A link built this way uses half the fiber of a conventional duplex pair, which lowers cable cost on new routes and frees strands on existing ones.

WDM Wavelength Assignment

This A unit transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, while the matching B unit reverses that assignment, which is why the two halves cannot be substituted for one another. Forwarding is store and forward with a 1K MAC address table, 14,880 pps at 10 Mbps and 148,800 pps at the higher rate, for 200 Mbps full-duplex throughput under IEEE 802.3 and 802.3u.

Connectors and Optical Performance

The fiber port is a single SC simplex connector for 100BaseFX and the copper port is one RJ45 10/100BaseT interface with auto-negotiation. Typical distance is 20 km on single-mode and 3000 feet on multimode, with 40 and 80 km options. Minimum transmit power is -8 dBm on the 20 km version, and sensitivity ranges from -18 dBm at 20 km to -30 dBm on the 80 and 120 km builds.

Enclosure, Power and Climate

The housing measures 70 x 95 x 26 mm and weighs 0.6 kg, which fits the small spaces where converters usually live: a pole box, a wall cabinet or a shelf beside a switch. Power is DC 5 V at 1.6 A with about 5 W drawn. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 degrees C, storage -20 to 60 degrees C, and humidity 5 to 90 percent non-condensing.
