Product Overview +

Optical Gain Without Conversion

Long fiber routes and large splitter trees both consume optical budget. The F-EDFA-14 is an erbium-doped fiber amplifier that adds gain in the 1550 nm band while the signal stays in optical form, so nothing is demodulated or regenerated. Any signal inside the band is raised to the rated level regardless of protocol or data rate, which covers high-speed digital and analog optical transmission alike.

Constant Output and Noise

Output is held at +14 dBm within 0.75 dB and can be trimmed over a 6 dB range, with input accepted from -10 to +10 dBm and +3 dBm typical. The noise figure is 6.3 dB at 0 dBm input. Polarization dependent loss is 0.3 dB and polarization dependent gain 0.4 dB, with 0.5 ps of polarization mode dispersion, so signal integrity is preserved across the band.

Ports, Band and Isolation

The amplifier operates from 1540 to 1563 nm and feeds a single optical output port, supporting up to eight multiplexed DWDM channels on the ITU grid. Input to output isolation is 30 dB, echo loss is 55 dB and pump power leakage is held to -30 dBm. Management connects through an RJ-45 SNMP interface, with an RS-232 port for direct serial communication.

Supply Options and Rack Space

Power can come from 90 to 265 VAC, -48 VDC or +24 VDC, which lets the amplifier sit in a telecom rack running on battery plant or in a headend on mains, with consumption near 50 W. The chassis is 19 x 14.5 x 1.75 inches, a single rack unit. Working temperature runs from -5 to 65 degrees C and humidity from 5 to 95 percent.

Connector Discipline and Applications

Connections must use SC/APC angle-polished connectors to control back reflection. Where plant is terminated in flat SC, ST or FC/PC, fit a PC to SC/APC jumper rather than mating the two directly. CATV and RF over fiber distribution, satellite L-band fiber links, DWDM transport and long-haul video are typical uses. StreamPort Media can check your power budget against this +14 dBm rating.
