Product Overview +
Boosting 1550 nm Signals
An amplifier is needed when loss from distance, splitters or multiplexers exceeds what the transmitter alone can cover. The F-EDFA-16 adds that margin optically at 1550 nm, holding a constant +16 dBm output. Because the gain medium is erbium-doped fiber rather than a receiver and retransmitter, protocol, modulation and data rate are irrelevant, and digital and analog signals are handled the same way.
Input Window and Adjustment
Input power from -10 to +10 dBm is accepted, with +3 dBm typical, across an operating window of 1540 to 1563 nm. Rated output is +16 dBm within 0.75 dB, adjustable across a 6 dB range to suit the loss downstream, and delivered through one output port. Output power variation stays within 0.75 dB and the noise figure is 6.3 dB measured at 0 dBm input.
DWDM Channels and Interfaces
Up to eight multiplexed DWDM channels on the ITU grid can be amplified together, which makes the unit suitable as a booster ahead of a long span or as a line amplifier mid-route. Isolation between input and output is 30 dB, echo loss is 55 dB and pump leakage is -30 dBm. Monitoring and control use an RJ-45 SNMP interface and an RS-232 communication port.
Powering and Mounting the Amplifier
Three supply options are available: 90 to 265 VAC, -48 VDC and +24 VDC, with consumption of about 50 W. The 19 x 14.5 x 1.75 inch enclosure takes one rack unit in a 19-inch frame. Working temperature spans -5 to 65 degrees C with storage from -40 to 80 degrees C, and relative humidity from 5 to 95 percent during operation.
Fitting It To Your Network
Headend CATV and RF over fiber distribution, satellite L-band links carried on fiber, DWDM transport and long-haul video networks all use amplifiers of this class. SC/APC connectors are required, with a PC to SC/APC jumper where the existing plant is flat polished. This output level is supplied on a quoted basis, so send StreamPort Media your loss budget and channel plan.
