Product Overview +
Television RF Carried Optically
Rebuilding a channel lineup at every site is expensive, so operators prefer to move the whole RF spectrum intact. The Thor F-RF-1310-TX-16mW is a 1310 nm optical transmitter that converts incoming coaxial RF directly into optical RF, letting an entire channel lineup travel on one fiber. Analog NTSC and PAL, QAM to J.83B, ATSC 8VSB, ATSC 3.0 and QPSK carriers are all handled without per-channel processing.
Laser Output and Distortion Figures
The laser delivers 16 mW of optical output, which is enough to feed a long link or to supply several receivers through passive splitters. Line width is under 1 MHz FWHM, extinction ratio above 20 dB and equivalent noise intensity below -160 dB/Hz. Link performance is quoted at CNR above 50 dB over 10 km of fiber, with CTB below -63 dB and CSO below -57 dB, and SBC restraint above 17 dBm.
RF Input, Flatness and Optics
RF enters on a single 75 ohm Type-F connector at an AGC-managed level of 11 to 29 dBmV, so modest variation in headend output does not require manual trimming. Flatness is held within 0.75 dB from 45 to 862 MHz and optical return loss is above 55 dB. Thor stresses that the optical port should be connected with SC/APC angle-polished connectors; fiber terminated in flat PC connectors needs a PC to SC/APC jumper.
Chassis, Weight and Environment
The transmitter measures 19 by 10 by 1.75 inches, a 1RU rack chassis that fits a standard headend frame, and weighs 2.5 kg. Operating temperature is 0 to 45 degrees C, so it belongs in a ventilated or air-conditioned equipment room rather than an outdoor cabinet. Allow front access to the RF connector and the optical port, and leave rear clearance for the mains feed in a populated headend rack.
Choosing a Power Level
The same family covers F-RF-TX-MN-2mW as a mini unit, plus F-RF-1310-TX-4mW, F-RF-1310-TX-8mW and F-RF-1310-TX-32mW at 1310 nm, and F-RF-1550-TX-8mW for 1550 nm systems. The 16 mW model suits point-to-point links and point-to-multipoint distribution with passive splitting. Pick the power level from the route length and split count, and pair the transmitter with Thor optical receivers or nodes at each endpoint.
