Product Overview +

Line-Level RCA Audio over Fiber

Long copper audio runs collect hum, lose level and pick up noise from whatever shares their cable tray. The Thor F-2A-RCA-TX/RX kit carries unbalanced RCA line-level audio over fiber instead, with a matched transmitter and receiver at each end. Because the path is optical, nearby power cabling, dimmer racks and motor drives have no effect on the signal, which makes it practical in electrically busy buildings and between separate structures.

Digitized Audio and Simple Operation

Audio is digitized at the transmitter, carried as light and restored at the receiver, so level and tone stay the same regardless of route length. Frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 29 kHz within 3 dB, with SNR better than 70 dB. Nothing needs configuring: the kits ship as matched pairs and come up as soon as they are powered and connected, with front LEDs reporting power and optical status for quick fault finding.

Audio and Optical Connections

Inputs and outputs are RCA connectors at 600 ohm unbalanced impedance, accepting up to 3.0 Vp-p. The optical interface uses ST/PC connectors and works over 50/125 or 62.5/125 multimode fiber to 2 km, or 9/125 single-mode fiber to 20 km. Transmit power falls between -14 and -8 dBm or -5 and 0 dBm depending on version, with -30 dBm receiver sensitivity and wavelengths of 1310 nm or the 1470 to 1610 nm CWDM range.

Power, Environment and Reliability

Each unit runs from 5 V DC at 2 A through an adapter accepting 90 to 240 V AC, and consumes under 5 W, so a pair adds almost nothing to a rack's heat load. Operating temperature spans -20 to +75 degrees C with storage from -40 to +85 degrees C, and relative humidity up to 95 percent non-condensing is accepted. Thor quotes MTBF above 100,000 hours for the platform.

Channel Counts and Applications

Kits scale with channel count: F-2A-RCA-TX/RX, F-4A-RCA-TX/RX, F-8A-RCA-TX/RX, F-16A-RCA-TX/RX and F-32A-RCA-TX/RX, all rated for 20 km on single-mode fiber. Rack-mount builds are listed as F-16A-RCA-TX/RX-RM and F-32A-RCA-TX/RX-RM for larger installations. Background music distribution, venue and campus audio links, CCTV audio and inter-building monitoring feeds are typical uses, and the channel count should be chosen with a little headroom for later additions.
