Product Overview +

Maximum Reach Optical Amplification

The F-EDFA-22 sits at the high end of the series with a constant +22 dBm output in the 1550 nm band, intended for the longest spans and the largest splitter networks. Gain is applied within erbium-doped fiber, leaving the signal in optical form throughout, so the unit works with any protocol or data rate and with analog optical payloads as well.

Levels, Noise and Linearity

Output holds at +22 dBm within 0.75 dB and is adjustable over 6 dB. Inputs from -10 to +10 dBm are accepted with +3 dBm typical, and the noise figure is 6.3 dB at 0 dBm input. Polarization dependent loss of 0.3 dB, polarization dependent gain of 0.4 dB and 0.5 ps of polarization mode dispersion keep the amplifier linear enough for RF over fiber.

Channel Capacity and Management Ports

Operation spans 1540 to 1563 nm with one output port, and up to eight multiplexed DWDM channels on the ITU grid can pass through together. Input to output isolation is 30 dB, echo loss 55 dB and pump power leakage -30 dBm. An RJ-45 SNMP interface allows the amplifier to be polled from a management system, while RS-232 gives direct serial access.

Power Feeds and Enclosure

The unit accepts 90 to 265 VAC, -48 VDC or +24 VDC and draws about 50 W, which lets it run from station battery plant during a mains outage. The enclosure measures 19 x 14.5 x 1.75 inches for a single rack unit. Working temperature is -5 to 65 degrees C with storage from -40 to 80 degrees C and humidity between 5 and 95 percent.

Specifying the Right Amplifier

CATV and RF over fiber headends, satellite L-band distribution, DWDM transport and long-haul video networks are the usual settings for this output class. SC/APC connectors are required, with a PC to SC/APC jumper where flat polished plant is in place. This level is supplied on quotation, so send StreamPort Media the span loss, split ratio and channel plan for sizing.
