Product Overview +

Top Output In The Series

Some distribution networks need every decibel available at the launch point. The F-EDFA-24 delivers a constant +24 dBm in the 1550 nm band, amplifying optically inside erbium-doped fiber so that no conversion to electrical form takes place. Protocol, data rate and modulation are irrelevant to the amplifier, and both high-speed digital and analog optical signals are handled in exactly the same way.

Output Rating and Input Window

The rated output is +24 dBm within 0.75 dB and can be trimmed across a 6 dB range to suit the downstream plant. Input power from -10 to +10 dBm is accepted, with +3 dBm typical. Noise figure is 6.3 dB measured at 0 dBm input, output power variation stays within 0.75 dB, and there is a single optical output port on the unit.

Band, Channels and Interfaces

Operation covers 1540 to 1563 nm, which includes the ITU DWDM grid, and up to eight multiplexed channels may be amplified together. Input to output isolation is 30 dB, echo loss is 55 dB, and pump power leakage is kept to -30 dBm so pump energy does not escape into the fiber plant. SNMP arrives on RJ-45, and RS-232 provides local serial access.

Mounting, Power and Climate

The chassis fills one rack unit at 19 x 14.5 x 1.75 inches. Power can be 90 to 265 VAC, -48 VDC or +24 VDC at roughly 50 W, letting the amplifier draw from station battery plant where mains reliability is a concern. Working temperature is -5 to 65 degrees C, storage -40 to 80 degrees C, and operating relative humidity 5 to 95 percent.

Specifying and Connecting It

CATV and RF over fiber distribution, satellite L-band transport over fiber, DWDM networks and long-haul video links are the usual applications. SC/APC angle-polished connectors are required, and where the plant is terminated flat, a PC to SC/APC jumper should be inserted rather than mating directly. This output level is supplied on quotation, so give StreamPort Media the span loss and channel plan.
