Product Overview +
Highest Output in the Range
Large distribution networks lose optical power at every splitter, and a bigger split budget starts at the transmitter. The Thor F-RF-1310-TX-32mW is the highest power model in Thor's 1310 nm CATV transmitter line, converting the RF spectrum into an optical signal so complete channel lineups travel over single-mode fiber. Thor lists the band as 45 to 1000 MHz, which covers cable TV and broadcast lineups in one carrier.
Laser Performance and Noise
A sensor-feedback-controlled laser produces 32 mW at 1310 nm, with line width under 1 MHz FWHM, extinction ratio above 20 dB and equivalent noise intensity below -160 dB/Hz. Link figures are CNR above 50 dB over 10 km of fiber, CTB below -63 dB and CSO below -57 dB, with SBC restraint above 17 dBm. Because the whole spectrum is carried as one optical signal, no channel has to be demodulated or re-encoded along the way.
RF Interface and Optical Connection
RF input is a single 75 ohm Type-F connector at an AGC-managed level of 11 to 29 dBmV, and optical return loss is above 55 dB. Flatness is within 0.75 dB from 45 to 862 MHz. The optical port should be connected with SC/APC angle-polished connectors, and fiber terminated in flat PC connectors needs a PC to SC/APC jumper, which is worth checking before a splitter tree is built out from the headend.
Rack Fit, Weight and Climate
The unit occupies a 19 by 10 by 1.75 inch chassis, one rack unit in a standard frame, and weighs 2.5 kg. Operating temperature is 0 to 45 degrees C, so it is a headend or equipment room device rather than an outdoor one. In a dense rack, leave the airflow path clear above and below, since the higher optical output means the laser section runs harder than on the lower power models.
Where the 32 mW Fits
The 1310 nm family runs from F-RF-TX-MN-2mW and F-RF-1310-TX-4mW through F-RF-1310-TX-8mW and F-RF-1310-TX-16mW to this 32 mW model, with F-RF-1550-TX-8mW serving 1550 nm networks. Campus-wide and city-scale designs with many split points, including FTTH deployments, are where the extra power pays for itself. Work out the loss budget first, since over-specifying optical power brings no benefit on a short link.
