Distribution Amplifier for Coaxial Plant

Splitters and long coaxial runs eat signal, and a heavily loaded building eventually runs out of level before it runs out of outlets. The Thor H-RF-AMP-40 is a compact amplifier for cable television and antenna distribution that restores that level. Low noise and low distortion make it suitable for MDU, broadband CATV and SMATV systems, including networks where several amplifiers are cascaded along a trunk.

Gain, Loading and Distortion

Forward gain is 40 dB across the 54 to 1000 MHz band, and the 550 MHz version offers the same gain over its narrower range. Maximum output is 40 dBmV with 158 channels on the wideband model, or 43 dBmV with 82 channels on the 550 MHz version. Flatness is 0.5 dB, composite second order is 70 dB and composite triple beat 61 dB, with a forward noise figure of 5 dB, or 4.5 dB on the 550 MHz build.

Band, Return Path and Controls

The amplifier covers 54 to 1000 MHz forward with a 5 to 42 MHz return path, so bidirectional cable services pass through rather than being blocked. Connectors are all F type female at 75 ohm impedance, with return loss of 18 dB and input and output test points at -20 dB. Gain control and slope control each offer a 0 to -20 dB range, and the input test point loss is quoted at 20 dB.

Power, Draw and Installation

The amplifier requires about 4 W and is powered from AC 110 V or AC 220 V mains, so it installs in a riser cupboard, a plant room or a headend rack position near the coaxial plant it serves. High-voltage surge protection is built in, which matters on runs connected to roof antennas, and a power LED confirms the unit is live without a meter. Keep the test points accessible for commissioning measurements.

Applications and Ordering Code

Use the amplifier for CATV QAM amplification over coax, for boosting off-air antenna signals such as ATSC, DVB-T and ISDB-T, and for analog NTSC or PAL distribution. Apartment buildings, hotels, hospitals, campuses and trunk runs fed from fiber receivers or headend combiners are the common installations. Thor lists one ordering code, H-RF-AMP-40, so the choice is simply how many units a given plant requires.
