Eight Channels In One Unit

Dense headends need many ASI paths and usually have limited fiber to work with. The F-8ASI moves eight DVB-ASI or SD-SDI signals between two locations on a single fiber, consolidating what would otherwise be several chassis into one rack unit at each end. Cable and IPTV operators use it between headends, hubs and transmitter sites where strand count is the limiting factor.

Eight-Way Multiplexing and Rates

Every one of the eight inputs is converted from its transport stream to an optical carrier, multiplexed onto the fiber and recovered at the receiver. Supported rates run from 0.5 Mbps to 622 Mbps, covering SMPTE 295M, SMPTE 310M, SMPTE 305, MPEG-2 and 540 Mbps HDTV streams. Power and optical signal detect LEDs give a quick indication of link health from the front of the rack.

Connector Count and Fiber Reach

The front panel presents eight 75 ohm BNC connectors for copper and one optical port, ST/PC as standard with SC/APC or SC/PC optional. Transmission media is 75 ohm RG-59 on copper and 9/125 micron single-mode fiber optically. Links reach up to 120 km on single-mode or around 2000 feet on multimode, and CWDM or DWDM optics are available for wavelength-shared routes.

Enclosure, Power and Approvals

The chassis measures 480 x 225 x 44 mm and mounts in one rack unit, drawing from an internal 110/240 V auto-sensing supply. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 degrees C and storage from -20 to 70 degrees C. Compliance covers FCC Part 15 Class A, CE, UL, CUL and TUV, so the unit can be accepted into regulated broadcast and telecom plant without extra paperwork.

Kits and Distance Variants

The F-8ASI kit includes a transmitter and receiver for 20 km single-mode links. For longer routes, order F-8ASI-Tx-40 with F-8ASI-Rx-40 for 40 km, or F-8ASI-Tx-80 for an 80 km span. Cable and IPTV headends, multi-program studio-to-transmitter links and regional distribution hubs are the typical settings for a link of this density.
