4K SDI Over Long Fiber Runs

The Thor Broadcast F-12G-SDI-TX/RX is a transmitter and receiver kit that carries 12G-SDI video over single-mode fiber. The signal travels uncompressed with zero delay, so picture quality stays at broadcast level from camera to switcher. It replaces long coax runs that cannot carry 12G-SDI reliably, making it a practical link for studios, stadiums, OB vans and live events.

Signal Formats and Performance

The kit handles 12G, 6G, 3G, HD and SD-SDI and detects the bit rate automatically, from 270 Mb/s up to 12 Gb/s. The transmitter includes a cable equalizer and re-clocker, and the link passes SDI pathological test patterns in line with SMPTE RP178. Output level is 800 mVp-p, with 12G-SDI alignment jitter of 0.3 UI or better.

Inputs, Outputs and Fiber

The transmitter has one SDI input plus a loop-out for local monitoring, and the receiver provides two SDI outputs to feed more than one destination. All video connections use 75 Ω BNC. The optical link uses an LC connector through an SFP module on single-mode fiber, so the units connect directly to standard single-mode patch cords and building fiber.

Built for Field and Rack Use

Both units run from DC 12 V (11 to 13 V), drawing about 3.6 W for the transmitter and 2.6 W for the receiver. They operate from −40 °C to 85 °C at up to 95% non-condensing humidity, which suits outdoor and mobile production. Each unit measures 127 × 51 × 32 mm, small enough to mount behind a monitor, on a camera rig or in a rack tray.

Choosing a Version

The standard F-12G-SDI-TX/RX kit carries one 12G-SDI channel in one direction. The F-12G-SDI-D-TX/RX version adds an RS485 return path for camera or PTZ control and runs from USB-C power.
