Product Overview +
Pre-Amplifier For DWDM Receivers
After a long metro span, DWDM channels can arrive too weak for the demultiplexer and receivers that follow. The F-PD-EDFA-XX is a pre-amplifier EDFA placed ahead of the demultiplexer or directly in front of the receiver, raising channel power so sensitivity improves and usable transmission distance grows. It is designed for C-band systems carrying 44 or 88 channels in metro networks.
Gain Levels and Flatness
Gain levels of 17, 20, 22 and 25 dB are available, giving 10 to 25 dB of gain per channel depending on the input level and the level selected. Gain flatness is 1.0 dB typical and 1.5 dB maximum across the band, and the noise figure is 4.5 dB typical. Polarization dependent gain stays within 0.2 dB and polarization mode dispersion within 0.5 ps.
Channels, Band and Connectors
The operating wavelength range is 1529 to 1564 nm and up to 42 channels can be handled at 100 or 200 GHz spacing. Input signal level is -30 to -13 dBm per channel, which is what allows weak post-span channels to be recovered. Optical connectors are SC/APC as standard. The display shows output power level and TEC temperature, while pump laser temperature and current are monitored.
Power, Size and Monitoring
The amplifier occupies one rack unit measuring 19 inches wide, 14 deep and 1.75 high. Supply is 80 to 240 V at 43 to 63 Hz AC, with a 40 to 58 V DC option, and consumption is 50 W maximum. Operating temperature is 0 to 50 degrees C with storage from -10 to 70 degrees C. An optional Ethernet NMS port adds a web interface for remote monitoring.
Selecting the Gain Level
The XX in the model code is the gain level, ordered from the 17, 20 and 25 dB options listed. Metro DWDM rings, long-span links and receiver-side boosting in transport networks are the usual applications. Connect with SC/APC, using a PC to SC/APC jumper if the existing plant is flat polished. StreamPort Media quotes the gain level that matches your measured channel power.
