Product Overview +

One Input Feeding Many Ports

A headend that splits a single 1550 nm feed across many fibers loses level at every split. The F-EDFA-XX-YY series amplifies that input and delivers it across multiple output ports from one 19-inch rackmount chassis, which removes a separate amplifier and splitter stage. CATV, FTTH and HFC networks use it for both long-distance transmission and local fiber distribution.

Standard and High-Power Variants

Two builds are specified. The standard model works from 1540 to 1563 nm with input from -8 to +9 dBm, per-port output of +15 to +24 dBm and a noise figure of 4.5 to 5.5 dB. The high-power model covers 1545 to 1565 nm with input from -5 to +10 dBm, total output to 39 dBm, noise figure to 6.0 dB and C/N of 50 dB or better.

Ports, Connectors and Distortion

Units are built with 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 optical outputs on SC/APC or LC/APC connectors, with FC/APC offered on the high-power model. Return loss is 55 dB or better at input and output on the standard build and 45 dB or better on the high-power build. C/CTB and C/CSO are both 63 dB or better, which matters for analog video on the same fiber.

Redundant Power and Rack Depth

Power comes from 90 to 265 V AC or -48 V DC through hot-swappable 1+1 redundant supply modules, drawing 140 to 160 W on the standard model and 70 W or less on the high-power version. A 1RU chassis measures 19 x 14 x 1.75 inches, while 16 to 64 port systems use a 2RU 19 x 15 x 3.5 inch frame. Operating temperature is -10 to +60 degrees C.

Building the Model Code

The code reads F-EDFA-XX-YY, where XX is the number of optical outputs and YY is the output power per port in dBm, chosen from +14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and +23. Listed examples are F-EDFA-8-16, F-EDFA-4-20 and F-EDFA-8-18. Management uses RJ45 SNMP with an RS232 local port. StreamPort Media can assemble the code from your port count and per-port budget.
