Ethernet and PoE over Copper

Rewiring an older building in Cat6 is often the most expensive part of an IP camera or access point upgrade. The Thor H-IP-TP-TX/RX extends Ethernet and Power over Ethernet across cabling that is already installed, including two-wire copper, telephone wire, twisted pair and coaxial cable. Devices at the far end connect normally, so the network grows into legacy infrastructure instead of waiting for new cable routes to be pulled.

Throughput, Reach and Power Delivery

The extender carries 10/100 Ethernet up to 500 meters, or 1,640 feet, with a physical layer rate of up to 240 Mbps and network throughput up to 90 Mbps. It supports IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at powered devices and can deliver up to 30 W of PoE at the remote end, which covers most cameras, access points and IP phones. IGMP multicast is supported for video distribution across the extended segment.

Ports, Media and Protection

Each unit presents a 10/100Base-T RJ45 interface on the network side and connects to two-wire copper, twisted pair, telephone cable or coax on the extended side. Input power is 48 to 57 V DC or PoE, so the master can be fed directly from a PoE switch. Built-in ESD protection guards the ports on long outdoor-adjacent runs, and status indicators report power, link, PoE and Ethernet activity at a glance.

Size, Climate and Link Layout

The unit measures 95 by 70 by 25 mm and weighs 190 g, small enough to sit in a ceiling void or a small enclosure beside the device it serves. Operating temperature spans -20 to +55 degrees C with storage from -40 to +85 degrees C and humidity to 95 percent non-condensing. Each unit is hardware configurable as master or slave, so a link runs from a PoE switch through the master to the slave at the far end.

Applications and Ordering the Kit

A typical chain is a PoE network switch, an H-IP-TP-TX master, the existing copper or coaxial run, and an H-IP-TP-RX slave feeding a PoE IP camera, wireless access point or IP phone. CCTV upgrades, access control, industrial automation and building networks are the common applications. Thor lists one configuration, H-IP-TP-TX/RX, supplied as a pair, and the same hardware covers both ends because the role is set in hardware.
