Product Overview +

Subscriber Terminal for FTTx

A fiber network only becomes useful at the point where it reaches the customer's own equipment. The Thor GPON Optical Networking Unit is the subscriber box installed at that point in a fiber to the x system. It terminates the fiber arriving at the home, apartment, hotel room or office and hands the services over to copper interfaces, so routers, set-top boxes and televisions connect in the usual way.

Internet and Television Together

These units carry both internet data and the cable television RF signal, converting each back to copper at the premises. In typical FTTH designs the RF television signal travels on the 1550 nm band while GPON data uses 1310 and 1490 nm, which is why one fiber can deliver both services without interference between them. Versions are offered with either one or two fiber ports to suit different network layouts.

Ports and Subscriber Connections

On the network side the unit presents one or two fiber ports, depending on the version selected and whether the design separates data and RF onto different strands. On the subscriber side it provides copper interfaces for the services being delivered. Thor has not published a specification table for this listing, so exact port counts, connector types and interface standards should be confirmed against the chosen version before cabling is ordered.

Installation and System Context

An ONU is normally mounted inside the premises near the fiber entry point, where it can reach both the incoming drop and the internal cabling. Because it is one element of a wider design, it is specified alongside the headend, optical amplifiers and splitters that feed it rather than selected on its own. Power arrangements, mounting position and the length of the internal copper runs are all set during the site survey.

Specifying and Ordering

Thor provides complete design and equipment delivery for FTTx systems, so the ONU is usually quoted as part of a package rather than as a standalone item, and the listing carries no separate ordering codes. Interface types and port counts depend on the version chosen. Share subscriber count, the services to be delivered and the fiber plan with StreamPort Media so the correct model can be confirmed before quotation.
