Serial Control Across Long Routes

RS-232, RS-422 and RS-485 links were designed for short, electrically quiet cable runs. The F-RSD-A/B-TXRX converter pair lifts those signals onto fiber so control data can travel up to 120 km without the interference, ground loops and distance limits of copper. PLCs, SCADA outstations, PTZ camera controllers and other asynchronous serial devices keep working unchanged at either end of the link.

Baud Detection and Error Rate

The converters detect the baud rate of the attached device automatically, across a range of 300 bps to 125 kbps, with a special-order high-speed version reaching 900 kbps. Typical code bit rate is 0 to 1 Mbps and the bit error rate stays below ten to the minus ninth. Operation is asynchronous, point to point, bi-directional and full duplex, so no protocol configuration is required.

Field Wiring and Fiber Ports

Serial connections use an industry standard copper terminal block. RS-232 uses IN, OUT and GND; four-wire RS-485 and RS-422 use T+, T-, R+, R- and GND; two-wire RS-485 uses D+, D- and GND. The fiber connector is SC by default with ST/PC and FC optional. Standard optical distance is 20 km on single-mode dual fiber, with single-fiber input and output available.

Protection, Supply and Environment

Interfaces include 1500 W surge protection and 15 kV ESD protection, which matters whenever serial cable leaves a building. The unit takes 5 V DC at the input from an AC 85-220 V supply and consumes 2.68 W. The environmental range runs from -30 to +75 degrees C at 0 to 95 percent humidity without condensation. LEDs show PWR, TxD and RxD, and the product is RoHS compliant.

Reading the Ordering Code

Ordering follows F-RSD-A/B-TX/RX-XX-YY, where XX is the optical distance of 20, 40, 80 or 120 km and YY is the connector type ST, FC or SC, with SC as the default. F-RSD-A/B-TX/RX-40 and F-RSD-A/B-TX/RX-80 are listed examples, and the 20 km version also works over multimode fiber.
