Portable RF over Fiber Transmitter

Temporary links, small headends and single-building feeds rarely justify a full rack transmitter. The Thor F-RF-TX-MN-2mW is a portable optical transmitter that carries 45 to 1000 MHz RF over single-mode fiber, handling analog television, digital QAM, ATSC and other broadband CATV signals. It offers a simple way to move a complete channel lineup from a headend or telecom room to another building over a short or medium distance.

Laser Type and Link Performance

A high-linearity DFB laser at 1310 nm, plus or minus 20 nm, provides 2 mW of output using direct optical strength modulation, which Thor rates for links up to about 10 km. Link C/N is 51 dB or better, link C/CSO 60 dB or better and link C/CTB 65 dB or better. AGC covers a 5 dB control range in each direction, with manual gain control adjustable from 0 to 10 dB.

RF Input, Flatness and Fiber

RF input level is 72 to 82 dBuV into 75 ohm with input reflection loss of 16 dB or better, and in-band flatness within 0.75 dB across the 45 to 862 or 1000 MHz range. The optical connector is SC/APC on single-mode fiber. Because the whole lineup is carried as one optical signal, no channel has to be demodulated, re-encoded or re-mapped at either end of the link.

Power, Size and Portability

Power is 12 V DC at 1.5 A from an included AC to DC supply with an F-type female coaxial connector, and power loss is 8 W or less.
