Product Overview +

Microphone Audio with Phantom Power

Condenser microphones need 48 V phantom power, and that requirement usually ties them to a nearby preamp. The Thor F-2A-XLR-PHP-TX/RX carries balanced XLR audio over fiber while supplying phantom power at the remote end, with an individual switch for each channel. Microphone and line sources can therefore sit far from the console, free of the hum and interference that long analog copper runs collect along the way.

Conversion, Dynamic Range and Filtering

Audio is sampled at 24 bits and 192 kHz, with FPGA-based digital coding and clock recovery holding the stream stable across the link. Dynamic bandwidth reaches 101 dB, total harmonic distortion sits at -90 dB and SNR is 100 dB, while gain accuracy stays within 0.1 dB and amplitude response within 0.5 dB. Non-linear distortion is held at or below 0.2 percent, and maximum input level is 9.5 dBm or better.

Connections, Levels and Optics

Audio interfaces are balanced at 600 ohm, handling signal levels from 0 to 8 Vp-p, with maximum input and output voltages of 0 to 4 V and 0 to 2.5 V respectively. The fiber side uses LC/PC single-mode connectors with transmitter power better than -7 dB and receiver sensitivity better than -24 dB. Wavelengths are 1310 nm and the 1470 to 1610 nm CWDM range, selected according to the function of each unit.

Power Options and Operating Range

Desktop units run from 12 V DC at 1 A and dissipate under 2 W, while rack versions take AC 110 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, so the same system suits a portable stage position or a permanent machine room. Working temperature spans -20 to 70 degrees C, storage covers -40 to 85 degrees C and relative humidity from 5 to 95 percent non-condensing is accepted. Working life is quoted above 100,000 hours.

Channel Counts and Fiber Distance

Thor lists F-2A-XLR-PHP-TX/RX and F-4A-XLR-PHP-TX/RX for two or four channels and F-8A-XLR-PHP-TX/RX for eight, with bidirectional versions F-2A-XLR-B-PHP-TX/RX and F-4A-XLR-B-PHP-TX/RX where a return path is needed. Distances of 20, 40, 80 or 120 km are offered depending on version. Stage and studio microphone links, houses of worship, sports venues and outside broadcast audio are the typical applications.
